  Education

Each season, UApresents goes out into the community to ensure that Tucson and Southern Arizona enjoy the benefits of arts education—from master classes and in-classroom work with touring performers to smaller community-based Arts Encounters and discussions. Through our School Matinee program, many K-12 students have experienced their first live performing arts event, while expanding their conception of the world and its diverse cultures. Likewise, we have provided the opportunity for teachers to learn more about how to integrate the arts into their classrooms and develop curriculum connections.

SCHOOL MATINEE SERIES

In previous years, more than 12,000 K-12 students from more than 100 schools have attended UApresents’ School Matinees. Students came from across Arizona, including Pima, Santa Cruz, Cochise, Graham, Greenlee, Pinal, Maricopa, Yavapai and Yuma counties to enjoy performances geared especially for them.

This season, due to limited access to Centennial Hall which is now being used as a classroom Monday through Thursday, and because reduced funding to the schools has severely limited bus transportation to Centennial Hall for School Matinees, UApresents has redefined our school programs in order to maintain our strong commitment to providing the experience of live performance to school children in our communities.

Though reduced in number, this year we are offering two excellent School Matinees at Centennial Hall as well as a new program in the schools along with other education and outreach activities we have planned.

ROYAL WINNIPEG BALLET
Friday, February 5, 2010
“Mixed Repertory”
Founded in 1939 by Gweneth Lloyd and Betty Farrally, the Royal Winnipeg Ballet holds the double distinction of being Canada's premier ballet company and the longest continuously operating company in North America. In 1953, the Company received its royal title, the first granted under the reign of Queen Elizabeth II. The one-hour matinee performance will give a demonstration of excerpts from the Company’s repertoire.

UNIVERSE OF DREAMS
Friday, February 12, 2010
Neal Conan and Ensemble Galilei
This presentation will be a one-hour excerpt of the evening performance. Narrated by Neal Conan, host of NPR’s Talk of the Nation, with projected images from the Hubble Space Telescope, this concert marries music to words. Inspired by pictures from the space telescope, the evocative music of the Celtic/early music Ensemble Galilei is a perfect backdrop for readings from a Navajo creation myth and the works of Stanley Kunitz, Jim Harrison and William Shakespeare. Audiences have been swept away by this extraordinary combination of lyrical poetry, images that transform our understanding of the universe and what critics have described as “music that speaks to the heart in ways that transcend mere language.”

UAPRESENTS IN THE SCHOOLS

UApresents and TUSD have collaborated to bring performing arts events to Sahuaro and Tucson High School theaters. Elementary and middle school students will be walked, and in some cases bused, to the theaters for the programs. More than 4,000 students will be able to experience these wonderful performances that also will contribute greatly to maintaining the arts in the TUSD curriculum where those budgets have been significantly reduced in the new budget year. We hope to extend the program to other school districts in the future based on the success of this year’s program. All performances will take place at 10:30 am

UApresents Children’s Festival
Sunday, January 24, 2010 at 1:00pm
Building upon the pre-performance event UApresents hosted last season in conjunction with “The Ant and the Elephant” event, many campus departments, including the Athletics department’s Club Arizona, the education component of Bio5 and Theater Arts, will again provide activities and displays for children. The Laramie Project: 10 Years Later… An Epilogue”

UApresents and the UA Theater Arts department are collaborating on the presentation of the reading of Moises Kaufman’s new work “The Laramie Project: 10 Years Later…An Epilogue” on October 12 2009 at Centennial Hall. Theater Arts students and local actors will perform the reading.

In September, a designated actor/teacher from the Tectonic Theater Project will come to Tucson for a two-day workshop in the technique of Kaufman’s “Moment Work” process to prepare the participants for the reading.

UApresents invites the community to join the campus in a range of activities – including discussion panels and film screenings – designed to bring diverse communities together to network, learn and share on matters of civil rights, violence and bigotry. All events are free and open to the public.

We will be announcing program details in the fall and also providing information to the schools at that time. Please watch our website, uapresents.org, over the summer and in the fall for updates and details on educational programs as they become available.
