Mariachi Sol de México and Vikki Carr

Friday, September 24, 2010, 8pm
UA Centennial Hall

Celebrate the bicentennial of the Mexican Dia de la Independencia! Carr's energy and style are as radiant and irresistible as her extraordinary voice. Bing Crosby, Ella Fitzgerald and Elvis Presley all named her among their favorite female singers of all time. Born Florencia Bisenta de Casillas Martínez Cardona, she is approaching the fifth decade of a career that includes more than 60 records and three Grammy awards for her Spanish-language albums. José Hernández, a proud fifth-generation mariachi, set a new standard for the genre with his Mariachi Sol de México. They have been featured on the film scores of Sea Biscuit, American Me, Don Juan de Marco, Glory Road and Beverly Hills Chihuahua, and are the first and only mariachi group to perform in China and North Korea and the first mariachi group to be nominated for a Latin Grammy. Maestro Hernández has also been recognized as one of the top 100 most influential Latinos in America by Hispanic Magazine.

Featuring Mariachi & Folklorico performers from the Viva Arizona Hispanic Performing Arts Conference
